Cathivo

About Cathivo

Cathivo is a simple, fast Catholic website: the Holy Scriptures in three public-domain English translations, the traditional prayers of the Church, the lives of the saints, and the relics venerated around the world. It has no advertising, no accounts and no tracking, and every page works without JavaScript.

The Bible

All three translations contain the 73 books of the Catholic canon, in the same order and at the same addresses, so you can switch between them without losing your place.

  • Douay-Rheims (Challoner revision). The classic English Catholic Bible, translated from the Latin Vulgate at Douai and Rheims in 1582–1610 and revised by Bishop Richard Challoner in 1749–1752. His notes and chapter summaries are included. Text from the DouayRheimsBible project.
  • Catholic Public Domain Version. A modern, literal translation of the Sacred Latin Vulgate by Ronald L. Conte Jr. Text from the cpdvbible project.
  • World English Bible, Catholic Edition. A modern translation from the Hebrew and Greek, including the deuterocanonical books and the Greek parts of Esther and Daniel. Text from the webc project.

The Douay-Rheims and the CPDV follow the Vulgate in naming and numbering. The Psalms are numbered as in the Latin and Greek, which from Psalm 10 to Psalm 147 is usually one lower than in Bibles translated from the Hebrew. Each psalm page gives the other number.

Relics

The photographs in the Relics section are real photographs taken by visitors and photographers and shared on Wikimedia Commons under free licenses, or in the public domain. Each photographer is credited, with the license, beneath the photo.

Notes

Notes marked with a red ✠ are Cathivo’s own short explanations of a passage. They are listed at the end of each chapter, after Bishop Challoner’s notes and the translators’ footnotes.

Type

The text is set in EB Garamond, a free revival of the types of Claude Garamond, by Georg Duffner and Octavio Pardo.
