De Profundis

For the faithful departed

De Profundis
Rogier van der Weyden, The Descent from the Cross · Painting · Public domain · Wikimedia Commons

Out of the depths I have cried to thee, O Lord:Lord, hear my voice.Let thy ears be attentiveto the voice of my supplication. If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities:Lord, who shall stand it?For with thee there is merciful forgiveness:and by reason of thy law, I have waited for thee, O Lord.My soul hath relied on his word:my soul hath hoped in the Lord. From the morning watch even until night, let Israel hope in the Lord.Because with the Lord there is mercy:and with him plentiful redemption. And he shall redeem Israelfrom all his iniquities.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.May they rest in peace.Amen.

Psalm 129, Douay-Rheims (Psalm 130 in Hebrew numbering).

In Latin

Sustinuit anima mea in verbo eius:speravit anima mea in Domino.A custodia matutina usque ad noctem:speret Israel in Domino.Quia apud Dominum misericordia:et copiosa apud eum redemptio.Et ipse redimet Israelex omnibus iniquitatibus eius.

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,et lux perpetua luceat eis.Requiescant in pace.Amen.

The psalm is from the Clementine Vulgate, the Latin text the Douay-Rheims was translated from; the closing prayer is from the Compendium.

Latin text: Clementine Vulgate (Hetzenauer, 1914), Psalm 129.
