Bishop Lawrence Scanlan, an Irish priest who had served miners across the Utah Territory, began the Cathedral of the Madeleine in 1900 on South Temple Street. It is dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene, and it was dedicated in 1909 by Cardinal James Gibbons of Baltimore. Its sandstone exterior is Romanesque, with twin towers. Its interior is Gothic and was richly painted in the 1910s and 1920s under Bishop Joseph Glass, with murals, carved gargoyles and German stained glass.

A thorough restoration in 1991–1993 renewed the paintings and reordered the sanctuary. It is the only cathedral in the United States dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene.

The cathedral runs a choir school, one of the few in the United States, and is known for its fine music and its annual Madeleine Arts and Humanities festival. It is a place of welcome for the Catholic minority of Utah.
