Pope Callixtus I

Callixtus had been a slave. As a deacon he was put in charge of the Christian cemetery on the Appian Way, which still bears his name, the Catacombs of Saint Callixtus, where many early popes were buried. As pope he was criticized by the rigorist Hippolytus for readmitting repentant sinners to communion. He is venerated as a martyr.
