Pope Damasus I

Damasus, a Spaniard by family, set about honouring the Roman martyrs, restoring their tombs in the catacombs and composing verse inscriptions for them, carved in a beautiful lettering. He commissioned his secretary, Saint Jerome, to revise the Latin translation of the Gospels, the beginning of the Vulgate. In his time the Emperor Theodosius declared the faith of the bishops of Rome and Alexandria the faith of the Empire.
