Pope Formosus

Formosus is remembered above all for what happened after his death. In 897 his successor, Stephen VI, had his body dug up, dressed in papal vestments and set on a throne to be tried in the so-called Cadaver Synod. The corpse was condemned and thrown into the Tiber. The outrage brought about Stephen’s own downfall, and later popes restored Formosus’s good name.
