Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, was the first pope from the Americas, the first Jesuit pope and the first to take the name Francis. He called for “a Church that is poor and for the poor,” opened an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in 2015, and wrote the encyclicals Laudato Si’ on care for our common home and Fratelli Tutti on human fraternity. He opened the Jubilee of Hope in December 2024. He died on Easter Monday, 21 April 2025, the day after giving his last Easter blessing, and was buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
