Pope Gelasius I

Gelasius, an African by origin, wrote to the Emperor Anastasius in 494 the famous letter on the “two powers” that govern the world, the sacred authority of bishops and the royal power of kings. It shaped Christian thinking about Church and State for a thousand years. He was known for his care of the poor during famine.
