Pope John XII

Made pope at about eighteen by his family, the lords of Rome, John XII is remembered as one of the most unworthy occupants of the See of Peter. In 962 he crowned Otto I of Germany as Emperor, and then turned against him. Otto had him deposed by a synod, and he died in 964. His pontificate marks the low point of the so-called “dark age” of the papacy.
