Pope Leo III

Attacked and nearly blinded by enemies in Rome in 799, Leo fled to the Frankish king Charlemagne. When Charlemagne came to Rome the next year, Leo crowned him Emperor in Saint Peter’s on Christmas Day 800, founding what would become the Holy Roman Empire.
