Pope Leo IX

Bruno of Egisheim, a German bishop, began the great reform of the Church in the eleventh century. He travelled across Europe holding councils against the buying of Church offices and against clerical marriage. In 1054, just after his death, his legates in Constantinople excommunicated the Patriarch Michael Cerularius, the event traditionally taken as the beginning of the schism between East and West. He is a saint.
