Pope Martin I

Martin held a council at the Lateran in 649 that condemned Monothelitism, the teaching, favoured by the Emperor, that Christ had only one will. Constans II had him arrested, carried to Constantinople, tried and publicly humiliated, and exiled to the Crimea, where he died of hunger and ill-treatment in 655. He is the last pope honoured as a martyr.
