Pope Nicholas I

Nicholas the Great was the most forceful pope of the ninth century. He insisted that kings and archbishops were subject to the moral law and to the Apostolic See. He refused to allow King Lothair II to divorce his wife, and his defence of the deposed patriarch Ignatius against Photius of Constantinople began a long quarrel with the Eastern Church. He is honoured as a saint.
