Pope Sylvester I

Sylvester was pope when the Emperor Constantine ended the persecutions and made Christianity welcome in the Empire. In his time the first great basilicas of Rome were built: Saint John Lateran, Saint Peter’s on the Vatican and Saint Paul’s on the Ostian Way. The Council of Nicaea met in 325, and he was represented there by legates. He is honoured as a saint on 31 December.
