Pope Sylvester II

Gerbert of Aurillac was the most learned man of his age, a mathematician, astronomer and teacher who helped bring the abacus and Arabic numerals to Europe. He was the first French pope, elected in 999, and he guided the Church into the new millennium with the young Emperor Otto III, his former pupil.
