Pope Urban VIII

Maffeo Barberini consecrated the new Saint Peter’s in 1626, and was Bernini’s great patron, commissioning the bronze baldacchino over the high altar. His pontificate also saw the trial of Galileo in 1633, a matter long regretted by the Church.
