Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe

In 1995 the Bishop of La Crosse, Raymond Burke, later a cardinal, felt called to build a shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas, as a place of prayer for his diocese and beyond. A wooded hillside south of La Crosse was chosen, overlooking the Mississippi valley.
The church, designed by the architect Duncan Stroik in a classical style with Romanesque touches, was dedicated on 31 July 2008. Its interior, with columns of marble, a coffered ceiling and a mosaic of Our Lady of Guadalupe above the altar, recalls the churches of Rome. Around it a devotional path climbs the hill past a votive candle chapel, the Stations of the Cross, the mysteries of the Rosary, and a memorial to the unborn.
The shrine welcomes pilgrims every day for Mass, confession and quiet prayer, and draws many on Our Lady’s feast, 12 December.
