Pope Boniface VIII

Boniface VIII proclaimed the first Holy Year in 1300, drawing huge crowds of pilgrims to Rome. His bull Unam Sanctam (1302) made the strongest claims ever put forward for papal authority over kings. It brought him into a bitter conflict with Philip IV of France, whose agents attacked and briefly held him prisoner at Anagni in 1303. He died a few weeks later.
