Pope Celestine V

After a vacancy of more than two years, the cardinals in 1294 elected an eighty-year-old hermit of the Abruzzo mountains, Pietro da Morrone. Unused to government, he resigned after only five months, the first pope to do so of his own free will. His successor kept him confined until his death. He was canonized as Saint Peter Celestine.
