Pope Gregory I

The first monk to become pope. Gregory fed starving Rome, sent Saint Augustine of Canterbury to the English, reformed the liturgy and wrote the Pastoral Rule. He called himself “servant of the servants of God.” Read his full life on the page for Saint Gregory the Great.
