Lothar of Segni, elected at thirty-seven, raised the medieval papacy to the height of its power. Kings accepted his judgment. He approved the way of life of Saint Francis and his brothers, and in 1215 he held the Fourth Lateran Council, which used the word “transubstantiation” of the Eucharist and required every Catholic to confess and receive Communion at least once a year. The Fourth Crusade, which he had called, ended to his horror in the sack of Constantinople in 1204.
