Pope John XXIII

Angelo Roncalli, a farmer’s son from near Bergamo, was elected at seventy-six and expected to be a caretaker pope. Within three months he announced an ecumenical council, and the Second Vatican Council opened in October 1962. His warmth won the world’s affection, and his encyclical Pacem in Terris (1963) was addressed to “all people of good will.” He died in June 1963 and was canonized in 2014.
