Pope Paul VI

Paul VI brought the Second Vatican Council to its close in 1965 and carried out its reforms, including the renewal of the liturgy. He was the first pope to fly and to visit every continent. In Jerusalem in 1964 he embraced the Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, and together they lifted the excommunications of 1054. His encyclical Humanae Vitae (1968) reaffirmed the Church’s teaching on marriage and the transmission of life. He was canonized in 2018.
