Pope Julius II

“The warrior pope” led his armies in person to win back the lands of the Papal States. He was also one of the greatest patrons in history. In 1506 he laid the foundation stone of the new Saint Peter’s Basilica, and he founded the Swiss Guard. He commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and Raphael to decorate his apartments.
