Pope Leo X

Giovanni de’ Medici, son of Lorenzo the Magnificent, loved art, music and hunting. To pay for the new Saint Peter’s he authorized the preaching of an indulgence in Germany. That provoked Martin Luther’s ninety-five theses in 1517, and Leo excommunicated Luther in 1521.
