Pope Pius IX

At thirty-one years, the reign of Pius IX (1846–1878) was the longest after Saint Peter’s. In 1854 he defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. The First Vatican Council (1869–1870), which he called, defined the infallibility of the pope when he teaches solemnly on faith and morals. In 1870 the troops of the new Kingdom of Italy took Rome, and he lived thereafter as a “prisoner in the Vatican.” He was beatified in 2000.
