Pope Leo XIII

Leo XIII was elected at sixty-seven and reigned for twenty-five years, until his death at ninety-three. His encyclical Rerum Novarum (1891), on the condition of workers, founded modern Catholic social teaching. He renewed the study of Saint Thomas Aquinas, opened the Vatican Archives to scholars, and composed the prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel.
