Pope Pius V

A Dominican friar of austere life, Pius V put the decrees of the Council of Trent into practice. He published the Roman Catechism (1566), the reformed Breviary (1568) and the Roman Missal of 1570, used for four centuries. He formed the Holy League whose fleet defeated the Ottoman navy at Lepanto on 7 October 1571. He asked all Christians to pray the Rosary for that victory, and he instituted the feast of Our Lady of Victory, now Our Lady of the Rosary. He is a saint.
