Pope Pius VI

Pius VI’s long pontificate ended in tragedy. French revolutionary armies occupied Rome in 1798, proclaimed a republic and carried the eighty-one-year-old pope into France as a prisoner. He died at Valence in August 1799, and some predicted he would be the last pope.
