Pope Pius VII

Elected at Venice in 1800, Pius VII signed a concordat with Napoleon, came to Paris for his coronation in 1804, and was then imprisoned by him from 1809 to 1814. He met his captor with patient courage. Back in Rome he restored the Society of Jesus in 1814 and, after Napoleon’s fall, gave refuge in Rome to the emperor’s mother and family.
