Pope Pius XI

Pius XI instituted the feast of Christ the King in 1925. In 1929 the Lateran Treaty with Italy created the independent Vatican City State and ended the “Roman Question.” His encyclical Quadragesimo Anno (1931) developed the Church’s social teaching. His Mit brennender Sorge (1937), read from German pulpits, condemned the Nazi regime.
