Pope Benedict XV

Elected a month after the outbreak of the First World War, Benedict XV called it “the suicide of civilized Europe.” He worked tirelessly for peace, proposing a peace plan in 1917, and organized relief for prisoners and refugees. In 1917 he promulgated the first Code of Canon Law.
