Pope Sixtus V

In only five years Sixtus V transformed Rome. He laid out great straight streets linking its basilicas, raised Egyptian obelisks in its squares, brought water to the city by a new aqueduct, and saw the dome of Saint Peter’s completed in 1590. He also moved the Scala Sancta to its present building and reorganized the Roman Curia into congregations.
