Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 80:2ac and 3b, 15-16, 18-19
2The One who reigns over Israel: Be attentive. For you lead Joseph like a sheep. The One who sits upon the cherubim: Shine forth
3in the presence of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh. Awaken your power and draw near, so as to accomplish our salvation.
15Turn back, O God of hosts. Look down from heaven, and see, and visit this vineyard;
16and complete what your right hand has planted, and look upon the son of man, whom you have confirmed for yourself.
18Let your hand be over the man on your right, and over the son of man, whom you have confirmed for yourself.
19For we do not depart from you, and you will revive us. And we will invoke your name.
Gospel
9And as they were descending from the mountain, Jesus instructed them, saying, “Tell no one about the vision, until the Son of man has risen from the dead.” 10And his disciples questioned him, saying, “Why then do the scribes say that it is necessary for Elijah to arrive first?” 11But in response, he said to them: “Elijah, indeed, shall arrive and restore all things. 12But I say to you, that Elijah has already arrived, and they did not recognize him, but they did whatever they wanted to him. So also shall the Son of man suffer from them.” 13Then the disciples understood that he had spoken to them about John the Baptist.
Why two sets of readings today? Our Lady of Guadalupe is Patroness of the Americas, so the bishops of the United States keep her day as a feast, with readings of its own. In much of the world it is an optional memorial, and the readings of the Advent weekday are read.

10Sing praise and rejoice, daughter of Zion. For behold, I approach, and I will dwell in your midst, says the Lord. 11And many nations will be joined to the Lord in that day, and they will be my people, and I will dwell in your midst. And you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you. 12And the Lord will possess his portion, Judah, in the sanctified land, and still he will single out Jerusalem. 13Let all flesh be silent before the face of the Lord: for he has arisen from his holy dwelling place.
Responsorial Psalm
18And by me, his handmaid, he has fulfilled his mercy, which he promised to the house of Israel. And he has killed the enemy of his people, by my hand this night.”
19Then, taking the head of Holofernes from the bag, she displayed it to them, saying: “Behold, the head of Holofernes the leader of the military of the Assyrians, and behold his canopy, under which he reclined in his drunkenness, where the Lord our God struck him by the hand of a woman.
Gospel
26Then, in the sixth month, the Angel Gabriel was sent by God, to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the name of the virgin was Mary. 28And upon entering, the Angel said to her: “Hail, full of grace. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.” 29And when she had heard this, she was disturbed by his words, and she considered what kind of greeting this might be. 30And the Angel said to her: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found grace with God. 31Behold, you shall conceive in your womb, and you shall bear a son, and you shall call his name: JESUS. 32He will be great, and he will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father. And he will reign in the house of Jacob for eternity. 33And his kingdom shall have no end.” 34Then Mary said to the Angel, “How shall this be done, since I do not know man?” 35And in response, the Angel said to her: “The Holy Spirit will pass over you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. And because of this also, the Holy One who will be born of you shall be called the Son of God. 36And behold, your cousin Elizabeth has herself also conceived a son, in her old age. And this is the sixth month for her who is called barren. 37For no word will be impossible with God.” 38Then Mary said: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.” And the Angel departed from her.
