5th Sunday of Ordinary Time
Readings for the universal ChurchGeneral Roman Calendar, used by Catholics worldwide
First Reading
1“Isn’t a man forced to labor on earth?
Aren’t his days like the days of a hired hand?
2As a servant who earnestly desires the shadow,
as a hireling who looks for his wages,
3so I am made to possess months of misery,
wearisome nights are appointed to me.
4When I lie down, I say,
‘When will I arise, and the night be gone?’
I toss and turn until the dawning of the day.
6My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle,
and are spent without hope.
7Oh remember that my life is a breath.
My eye will no more see good.
Responsorial Psalm
1Praise the LORD,
for it is good to sing praises to our God;
for it is pleasant and fitting to praise him.
2The LORD builds up Jerusalem.
He gathers together the outcasts of Israel.
3He heals the broken in heart,
and binds up their wounds.
4He counts the number of the stars.
He calls them all by their names.
5Great is our Lord, and mighty in power.
His understanding is infinite.
6The LORD upholds the humble.
He brings the wicked down to the ground.
Second Reading
16For if I preach the Good News, I have nothing to boast about, for necessity is laid on me; but woe is to me if I don’t preach the Good News. 17For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward. But if not of my own will, I have a stewardship entrusted to me. 18What then is my reward? That when I preach the Good News, I may present the Good News of Christ without charge, so as not to abuse my authority in the Good News. 19For though I was free from all, I brought myself under bondage to all, that I might gain the more.
22To the weak I became as weak, that I might gain the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I may by all means save some. 23Now I do this for the sake of the Good News, that I may be a joint partaker of it.
Gospel
29Immediately, when they had come out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30Now Simon’s wife’s mother lay sick with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. 31He came and took her by the hand and raised her up. The fever left her immediately, and she served them. 32At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed by demons. 33All the city was gathered together at the door. 34He healed many who were sick with various diseases and cast out many demons. He didn’t allow the demons to speak, because they knew him. 35Early in the morning, while it was still dark, he rose up and went out, and departed into a deserted place, and prayed there. 36Simon and those who were with him searched for him. 37They found him and told him, “Everyone is looking for you.” 38He said to them, “Let’s go elsewhere into the next towns, that I may preach there also, because I came out for this reason.” 39He went into their synagogues throughout all Galilee, preaching and casting out demons.
