Readings for the universal ChurchGeneral Roman Calendar, used by Catholics worldwide

First Reading

Job 38:1, 8-11

1Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind,

8“Or who shut up the sea with doors,

when it broke out of the womb,

9when I made clouds its garment,

and wrapped it in thick darkness,

10marked out for it my bound,

set bars and doors,

11and said, ‘You may come here, but no further.

Your proud waves shall be stopped here’?

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 107:23-24, 25-26, 28-29, 30-31

23Those who go down to the sea in ships,

who do business in great waters,

24these see the LORD’s deeds,

and his wonders in the deep.

25For he commands, and raises the stormy wind,

which lifts up its waves.

26They mount up to the sky; they go down again to the depths.

Their soul melts away because of trouble.

28Then they cry to the LORD in their trouble,

and he brings them out of their distress.

29He makes the storm a calm,

so that its waves are still.

30Then they are glad because it is calm,

so he brings them to their desired haven.

31Let them praise the LORD for his loving kindness,

for his wonderful deeds for the children of men!

Second Reading

2 Corinthians 5:14-17

14For the love of Christ compels us; because we judge thus: that one died for all, therefore all died. 15He died for all, that those who live should no longer live to themselves, but to him who for their sakes died and rose again. 16Therefore we know no one according to the flesh from now on. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know him so no more. 17Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

Gospel

Mark 4:35-41

35On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let’s go over to the other side.” 36Leaving the multitude, they took him with them, even as he was, in the boat. Other small boats were also with him. 37A big wind storm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so much that the boat was already filled. 38He himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and asked him, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are dying?” 39He awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? How is it that you have no faith?” 41They were greatly afraid and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
