Saint Peter

The fisherman Simon, whom Christ named Peter, the “rock,” and to whom he gave the keys of the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 16). He led the Apostles after Pentecost, went at last to Rome, and was crucified there under Nero. Saint Peter’s Basilica stands over his tomb. Every pope since is called his successor.
