Readings for the universal ChurchGeneral Roman Calendar, used by Catholics worldwide

First Reading

Acts 8:1b-8

1Saul was consenting to his death. A great persecution arose against the assembly which was in Jerusalem in that day. They were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except for the apostles. 2Devout men buried Stephen and lamented greatly over him. 3But Saul ravaged the assembly, entering into every house and dragged both men and women off to prison. 4Therefore those who were scattered abroad went around preaching the word. 5Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ. 6The multitudes listened with one accord to the things that were spoken by Philip when they heard and saw the signs which he did. 7For unclean spirits came out of many of those who had them. They came out, crying with a loud voice. Many who had been paralyzed and lame were healed. 8There was great joy in that city.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 66:1-3a, 4-5, 6-7a

1Make a joyful shout to God, all the earth!

2Sing to the glory of his name!

Offer glory and praise!

3Tell God, “How awesome are your deeds!

Through the greatness of your power, your enemies submit themselves to you.

4All the earth will worship you,

and will sing to you;

they will sing to your name.” Selah.

5Come, and see God’s deeds—

awesome work on behalf of the children of men.

6He turned the sea into dry land.

They went through the river on foot.

There, we rejoiced in him.

7He rules by his might forever.

His eyes watch the nations.

Don’t let the rebellious rise up against him. Selah.

Gospel

John 6:35-40

35Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will not be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36But I told you that you have seen me, and yet you don’t believe. 37All those whom the Father gives me will come to me. He who comes to me I will in no way throw out. 38For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. 39This is the will of my Father who sent me, that of all he has given to me I should lose nothing, but should raise him up at the last day. 40This is the will of the one who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”
