Saint Mark the Evangelist

Readings for the universal ChurchGeneral Roman Calendar, used by Catholics worldwide

First Reading

1 Peter 5:5b-14

5Likewise, you younger ones, be subject to the elder. Yes, all of you clothe yourselves with humility and subject yourselves to one another; for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” 6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time, 7casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. 8Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9Withstand him steadfast in your faith, knowing that your brothers who are in the world are undergoing the same sufferings. 10But may the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. 11To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. 12Through Silvanus, our faithful brother, as I consider him, I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand. 13She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, greets you. So does Mark, my son. 14Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace be to all of you who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 89:2-3, 6-7, 16-17

1I will sing of the loving kindness of the LORD forever.

With my mouth, I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.

2I indeed declare, “Love stands firm forever.

You established the heavens.

Your faithfulness is in them.”

5The heavens will praise your wonders, LORD,

your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones.

6For who in the skies can be compared to the LORD?

Who among the sons of the heavenly beings is like the LORD,

15Blessed are the people who learn to acclaim you.

They walk in the light of your presence, LORD.

16In your name they rejoice all day.

In your righteousness, they are exalted.

Gospel

Mark 16:15-20

15He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to the whole creation. 16He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who disbelieves will be condemned. 17These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new languages; 18they will take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it will in no way hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” 19So then the Lord, after he had spoken to them, was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20They went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word by the signs that followed. Amen.
